We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate to join a world-leading and dynamic research team at the Department of Life Sciences at Imperial College London, South Kensington Campus. Successful applicants will help produce independent and original research within part of a large team of postdocs and technicians within the Crisanti group at Imperial College that forms part of a larger, multi-disciplinary research consortium called Target Malaria. The Crisanti lab has pioneered the genetic transformation of the human malaria mosquito and it is now focused on projects aimed at creating gene drive systems based on the use of DNA endonucleases with the ultimate goal of malaria control by decreasing the reproductive potential of mosquito populations. The lab has achieved a number of notable successes in recent years and is at the frontier in the field of mosquito transgenesis, genome editing and gene drive.
An important, unique aspect of this role will be to provide molecular biology and genetics training to more junior members of a large laboratory, to assist in their professional development and to ensure the highest research standards are maintained in the laboratory.
The project is aimed at designing, building, and testing novel gene drives through the incorporation of three components: nucleases with improved activity; rational choice of new genetic targets to be affected by the gene drive; modulating and regulating gene drive expression in time and space
Duties and responsibilities
- Taking initiatives in the planning of research
- Directing the work of small research teams including undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Identifying and developing suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data
- Conducting data analysis and ensuring the validity and reliability of data at all times
- Maintaining accurate and complete records of all findings
- Writing regular (monthly) internal reports
- A PhD (or equivalent) in Biological Sciences or a related subject with a strong background in and understanding of molecular and cellular biology and genetics, evidenced by contributions to publications.
You must be able to demonstrate:
- experience in genome editing
- significant experience in molecular biology including modern methods of DNA cloning
experience in the use of DNA analysis software (Vector NTI, Geneious, Benchling or similar)
- significant experience in genetic techniques
- proven experience in teaching laboratory techniques
- experience of day to day supervision of masters and/or PhD students
- experience of working with model organisms
- demonstrable knowledge of the most up to date techniques in molecular biology such as electrophoresis, PCR, qPCR, molecule blotting and probing, site specific mutagenesis, bacteria and cell–lines transformations.
- knowledge of genetics
You must also be able to demonstrate:
- the ability to work effectively as part of a team and to be open minded and cooperative.
- the ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving.
- excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication.
- the ability to organise your own work with minimal supervision, and prioritise effectively in response to deadlines.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD, will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £33,380 - £35,061 per annum.
This is a full-time, fixed-term positions available until 31 January 2020, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding.
