The Photonics group at Imperial College London has many years’ experience in developing and implementing advanced fluorescence microscopy and imaging techniques for applications in medicine and the life sciences. Our recent work includes the development of advanced optical super-resolution microscopy systems based around STED, single molecule localisation and structured illumination techniques. We also have a long history of work in optical sectioning microscope, ranging from pioneering some of the early structured illumination techniques to more recent developments in single lens light sheet imaging.
Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/ Associate to work on a new research project, PROCHIP, funded under the European FET Open H2020 programme. The project is coordinated by the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnologies in the Polytechnico di Milano and consists of six partners from Italy, France and the UK, including universities, research centres and one company. This multi-disciplinary project is an ambitious programme aimed at developing high-throughput, fully-integrated, lab-on-a-chip devices incorporating advanced super-resolved imaging based on structured light sheet methods. Imperial’s role in the project is in defining and refining the structured light sheet techniques that will be fabricated into integrated devices by other members of the project. Other partners in the project will be developing deep-learning based image analysis and will include end users of the technology who will be applying it to single cells isolated from tumour models in order to image and profile their chromatin organisation. The eventual aim is to be able to image thousands of such cells in high throughput for cancer diagnostics and targeted therapies.
Duties and responsibilities
You will have experience with developing high end optical microscopy systems. You will be responsible for constructing our own bulk structured illumination systems at Imperial as well as helping the other partners in the programme with advice on and designs for optical system configurations in their integrated devices including providing models for simulation of likely imaging performance.
For the Research Assistant post you will be about to complete a PhD and for the Research Associate post you will have a PhD or an equivalent level of professional qualification in the area of physics or engineering.
In addition, you must also be able to demonstrate all the following essential criteria:
• A strong record of research experience in experimental optical microscopy, ideally including super-resolution and/or light sheet techniques.
• Proven research experience in optical system construction and alignment.
• Experience in computer control and analysis of experimental data.
• Experience in modelling the performance of high numerical aperture, diffraction limited optical imaging systems.
• Knowledge of super resolution and/or light sheet techniques and optical imaging systems
The position is available for a fixed term period of 34 months in the first instance, from December 2018.
