An existing HPTPC prototype has constructed, and will be further developed in 2019.

Duties and responsibilities

Your work will involve taking a leading role in merging the UK’s HPTPC effort with the high pressure gas TPC effort at Fermilab, as well as firmware and hardware work for neutrino detector data acquisition development for a future long baseline experiment. The Imperial High Energy Physics Group has a strong experimental programme in the neutrino area with teams analysing data from the T2K and Super-Kamiokande experiments. We have been actively involved in T2K from the start and the current T2K International Co-Spokesperson is a member of the group. We are also actively involved with the future long baseline neutrino experiments DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande There is also leadership in both the search for sterile neutrinos with SoLid in Belgium and the emerging collaboration. Accelerator activities include enhancing conventional neutrino beams and investigating new approaches such as nuSTORM.

Essential requirements

You will hold a PhD in Physics or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience.

You must have have the following essential criteria:

  • Good problem-solving and practical/laboratory skills
  • A strong research record with clearly defined individual contributions and/or professional experience in a related technical field
  • Ability to take on responsibilities in an independent manner
  • A proven ability to communicate with people at all levels
  • Experience with long baseline neutrino experiments
  • Experience with Monte Carlo and advanced statistical analysis techniques
  • Experience developing neutrino experimental apparatus, or
  • Experience prototyping particle or nuclear detectors and their calibration with particle beams and/or sources, or
  • Experience with design, construction, calibration, and/or data analysis of particle/nuclear detectors

In addition it would be desirable if you had:

  • Experience of working in an internationally collaborative environment
  • Evidence of ability to write high quality research papers
  • Familiarity with data analysis techniques

Further information

This is a fixed term position available immediately for up to one year. Work will be carried out in London with some travel throughout the UK and to the USA.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £34,397 - £37,486 per annum.

In addition to neutrino activities, the Imperial Group also has major involvement with the CMS and LHCb experiments at the LHC, the MICE experiment in the UK, the search for dark matter with the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment in the US, and the search for charged lepton flavour violation with COMET in Japan. There are also significant accelerator, phenomenology and Grid computing programmes.
