The Grantham Institute are seeking to recruit a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join our mitigation team, principally to develop and use its Integrated Assessment Model (TIAM-Grantham), as part of a new EU Horizon 2020-funded international research project (Paris-REINFORCE).

Paris-REINFORCE aims to develop realistic emissions reduction pathways for a range of EU and non-EU major economies, so as to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change, to limit global warming to well below 2oC, in the most realistic and feasible manner. The project’s novelty and value stems from its close interaction with policy makers, businesses and other stakeholders from the different economies involved, so as to arrive at a set of mitigation strategies that have strong buy-in from those that will deliver them.

The project consortium is led by the National Technical University in Athens and includes a wide range of partners from across the world. The Grantham Institute will lead a major work package aimed at linking the non-EU economies’ mitigation strategies to global-level mitigation modelling and assessment. This represents an exciting opportunity to work with world class researchers and deliver critical and impactful research over the next three years.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be part of the team responsible for undertaking global and regional-level mitigation modelling using the Grantham Institute’s TIMES Integrated Assessment Model (TIAM-Grantham), as well as working closely with the Imperial College team that built the new MUSE integrated assessment model that will also be used in the project.

You will also be involved in engaging in the wider community of modellers using the TIMES modelling framework across the world (as part of the Energy Technology Systems Analysis Programme – ETSAP - that supports the development of the framework). This will enable you to develop the modelling capabilities, for use in a range of other potential projects focused on mitigation pathways analysis.

Essential requirements

You will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in an area relevant to climate science, engineering, energy modelling, modelling, or research software development.

In addition, you must be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Experience of energy system and / or integrated assessment modelling, ideally using the TIMES modelling framework
  • Knowledge regarding the nature of climate change, its causes and possible solutions
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative research skills
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write up research for peer-reviewed journals and conferences in English
  • Good verbal communication skills, including ability to present work progress to partners
  • Proven technical writing and analysis skills, and a creative approach to problem-solving

The position is available for a fixed term period of up to 36 months starting in December 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477 - £38,566 per annum.
