Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/Associate within the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group of the Department of Physics. The post holder will be responsible for using Imperial’s global magnetospheric simulations (based on the Gorgon code) to perform numerical experiments to ascertain the effect of the solar wind and internal field changes on the intensity and occurrence of geomagnetically induced currents. The post-holder will further compare the output of the simulations with spacecraft and ground-based observations, to verify the output and better understand the physical mechanisms that produce GICs. The overarching aim of this work is to better understand the behaviour of the solar wind magnetosphere interaction during space weather events. The work will focus on modelling the magnetospheric and ionospheric conditions that are associated with strong geomagnetically induced currents on the surface of the Earth.
Duties and responsibilities
Based in the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group, the post holder will work closely with the Plasma Physics Group. This project will involve a high degree of teamwork and interdisciplinary research. The primary duties of the post holder include: helping to produce independent and original research within the space and atmospheric physics group and submit publications to refereed journals. The work shall be performed in the context of the NERC-funded SWIGS consortium.
You will have a PhD (for appointment at Research Associate level) or be about to obtain a PhD (for appointment at Research Assistant level) in Space Physics, or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience
You must also be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:
• Experience in the field of space plasma physics
• Demonstrated expertise in magnetospheric physics
• Demonstrated experience in performing spacecraft data analysis and/or theoretical work applied to magnetospheric physics
In addition, you will have to demonstrate evidence of the ability to carry out original research and produce significant first author scientific research papers.
Research experience in using the output of magnetospheric simulations for data analysis and/or post-processing and/or comparing with satellite observations would be advantageous.
It is expected that you will use the position to develop your track record and research independence.
The position is available to start as soon as possible and available until the grant end date 2nd April 2021.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range: £35,477 - £38,566 per annum
