Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the group of Professor Henry Rzepa in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London. The post is funded through an EPSRC Grant for a collaborative project between Professor Henry Rzepa (Imperial), Tom Sheppard (UCL), Professor Andy Whiting (Durham), and Dr Jordi Burés (Manchester). The Research Fellow’s project will be supervised by Professor Rzepa.

You will focus on computational modelling using DFT quantum theory of reaction mechanism pathways of novel catalysts for direct amidation reactions informing the design new synthetic variants. There will be a unique opportunity to experience the latest techniques in data management as part of the project, according to modern FAIR data principles.

You will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team of collaborators at UCL, Durham & Manchester, who will carry out the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel catalysts for direct amidation reactions and reaction kinetic analysis as part of the same EPSRC-funded project. It is anticipated that the project will also involve interaction with collaborators at major UK chemical companies. Background information can be found at the following DOIs: chxq, gd5sr6, cbnx.

Duties and responsibilities


  • You will contribute to the design and discovery of novel organic chemical reactions and synthetic sequences by computational modelling and analysis.

  • You will record, analyze and write up the results of the research.

  • You will contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to peer reviewed journals.

  • To prepare progress reports on research for funding bodies as required.

  • To contribute to the preparation and drafting of research bids and proposals.

Essential requirements

You must also meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a PhD in Organic and/or Computational Chemistry
  • Experience of research techniques in computational quantum chemistry, including elucidation of potential energy surfaces using quantum mechanical methods.
  • Experience in the use of computational chemistry modelling programs such as Gaussian and the associated editing/analysis programs such as Gaussview
  • Familiarity with data management techniques and use of the Internet to display and disseminate results.

The appointment is for 24 months, starting winter 2020-21.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum.
