The postholder will work on a photonic quantum metrology project funded by the European Commission Horizon:2020 Future & Emerging Technologies project, STORMYTUNE: Spectral-temporal Metrology with Tailored Quantum Measurements.

Duties and responsibilities

This multi-institute project aims to develop quantum measurements and systematically study the interplay between these measurements and auxiliary probe states. The goal is to provide a toolbox for enhanced time-frequency mode quantum metrology at levels of precision that have so far remained elusive. The successful candidate will be tasked with developing state-of-the-art high-gain quantum light sources to generate tailored probe states as well as measurements strategies which bring an enhancement to metrology tasks.


As part of Imperial College London’s contribution to the project, we will perform weak-field homodyne measurements, using photon-number resolving detection in the form of superconducting transition edge sensors. Weak-field homodyne detection in the time domain will enable multiparameter estimation of a dynamical processes, relevant to molecular processes. We will seek to use time-frequency entanglement, together with our weak-field homodyne capabilities to explore measurements beyond the shot noise limit.

Essential requirements

It is essential to the project that you have the following:

• Hold a PhD, (or equivalent) in the area of ultrafast quantum optics

• Proven research experience in experimental quantum optics

• Strong record of research delivery and publication record in ultrafast quantum optics
