Job summary

We are seeking to appoint two Research Operations Administrators to join the Department of Life Sciences.

Reporting to the Departmental Manager (Research) and working closely with departmental administrators, you will play a key role in the provision of a professional administrative support service.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals wishing to develop high level administrative skills and a good understanding of university processes, policies and activities.

You will act as the first point of contact for our academic and research staff, assisting and advising in matters relating to administration of research grants and associated activities.

The post will involve a high level of interaction with staff at all levels, and you must combine a professional approach with a friendly and welcoming manner.

Duties and responsibilities

You will have an appropriate academic qualification or equivalent vocational qualification, together with experience in a similar role.

Experience of working in a research or academic environment, evidence of excellent planning and organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise and manage a high and varied workload in order to meet deadlines is essential.

You will also be expected to demonstrate experience of providing research support to the academic community in the application of grants (pre-award), and during project delivery (post- award), which includes managing budgets, financial reporting and providing sound financial management advice.

Essential requirements

You will have experience of recruitment and selection processes and procedures, experience of Pre and Post Award grant management (including costing tools and application systems) and excellent IT skills including advanced use of Microsoft Excel. Experience of both Microsoft SharePoint and Oracle database systems is desirable.  A management or financial qualification, together with a biological sciences qualification, or lab experience, would also be an advantage, but are not essential.

You must be able to work with minimum supervision and take a proactive approach to your work.  You will be expected to demonstrate good influencing and negotiating skills, and be accurate, articulate and committed to the provision of excellent customer service.
