Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the Centre for Plasmonics and Metamaterialsin the Departments of Mathematics and Physics at Imperial College London.
You will be working in the Centre for Plasmonics and Metamaterials in the Departments of Mathematics and Physics at Imperial College London.
You will be integrated into a European project DYNAMO (Dynamic Spatio-Temporal Modulation of Light by Phononic Architectures: https://dynamo-project.eu/), which has multiple partners across Europe.
Duties and responsibilities
You will develop the theoretical background for elastic and mechanical metasurfaces based around asymptotic, semi-analytic and numerical models for thin plates and substrates structured with pillars. In addition, you will be involved in scientific computation and numerical simulations that lead to physical and mathematical understanding and theoretical results.

Essential requirements
You are required to hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or a subject relevant to the project.
You ideally should also possess:
- Expertise in multiple scattering techniques for the analysis of vibrational modes in elastic metasurfaces theory
- Familiarity with commercial finite element packages such as Comsol, or open source packages such as FreeFEM++, FEniCS, Specfem or other finite element software, or with developing their own software
- Experience in a coding language such as Python, C++, Julia, or Matlab
- Experience of giving talks at internationally recognised conferences and workshops
- Experience writing research papers in Engineering, Physics or Applied Mathematics
- A broad and strong background in Wave Physics, including Topological Physics
- Strong computational skills
Further information
The position is full time, fixed term for 24 months, and you will be based in our South Kensington Campus. The expected start date is flexible, with an aim of being 1 May 2023.
Please note that appointments will be made at the bottom point of the salary scale.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.
