We offer short courses for experienced clinicians, focused on developing essential roles and innovative areas of educational practice.  These take place at Imperial’s St Mary’s Campus in central London.

The courses are derived from modules in the Diploma / Master’s course in Surgical Education, a programme that has run successfully in the Department of Surgery and Cancer for over a decade.

Our Master’s-level short course offerings draw on leading educational and research practices and collaborations.  They are stimulating, intellectually challenging, and practice-oriented. You will engage with subject areas through practical exercises, and high level discussions with peers, experienced academic tutors and external experts. Throughout you will be encouraged to incorporate educational concepts into the way you approach learning and teaching.

You can either attend the short course (receiving an attendance certificate) or take it for University credit by successfully completing the assessments.

1. Developing Educational Supervision

Who are the short courses for?

These courses are suitable for those with significant clinical experience (e.g. those near the end of training or consultants), a demonstrated interest in education and in the short course topics.  A formal qualification in clinical education, is not required, but would your facilitate learning.

What it means to take the credit-bearing, assessed version?

If you wish to take the short course for more than a certificate of attendance you also have the option to take if for academic credit. 

Those who select the credit-bearing assessed route will receive academic supervision with formative feedback and access to Imperial’s electronic library collections. 

Successful completion of the assessments enables you to bank credits that can be applied to approved Master’s level courses in the future. Candidates wishing to apply credits to degree awarding programmes must fulfill the appropriate admissions requirements.  

Our assessed short courses offer significant additional value to a certificate of attendance for CPD.  Beyond the academic credits accrued, participants electing to complete the assessments will have produced a Master’s level educational curriculum design around the short course topic area they participated in and these can be brought back and considered for implementation in the workplace.

How to apply and register

If you would like more information or are interested in attending one of the short courses please contact the Programme Director, Kirsten Dalrymple (k.dalrymple@imperial.ac.uk). 

Those wishing to attend need to send a brief ‘application' (i.e. a short CV and a brief statement explaining why the course is relevant to their educational/professional practice). We will notify you of the outcome within a week of your receiving your application.

Once your place is confirmed, you will be sent further information on how to register for either the attendance or credit bearing option.

You should provide a brief letter of support from your employer if they are paying your fees.
