Delivery of these short courses will be suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic and will not run in 2021. Please check back on the website for an update in early 2022.

We offer short courses for experienced clinicians, focused on developing essential roles and innovative areas of educational practice.  These take place at Imperial’s St Mary’s Campus in central London.

The courses are derived from modules in the Diploma / Master’s course in Surgical Education, a programme that has run successfully in the Department of Surgery and Cancer for over a decade.

This June 1-4, 2020 we are offering Developing Educational Supervisors as a short course.

Educational supervisors (ES) play a formal role in the training of NHS clinical staff that is recognised by the GMC.  Educational Supervisors act to support and monitor the longitudinal development and progression of trainees by means of coaching, mentoring and supervision. These are high-level interactive skills that require cultivation on the part of the ES.

The Developing Educational Supervisors course provides an opportunity for you to explore and develop conversational micro skills that will support a supervisee-centered interactional approach to clinical and educational supervision.

You will develop supervision skills that can be used with individuals and with teams, through small group work with a coach focused on real-life work-based scenarios.  Our short course references educational domains specified by the Academy of Medical Educator’s (AoME) Professional Standards Framework and adopted by the GMC to formalise the role and parameters of the Educational Supervisor.

Participation in our short courses also allows you access to:

  • Interactive approaches to teaching and coaching with experienced academic tutors, high-level external speakers, and workshops focused on developing focused areas of educational practice
  • A carefully considered professional development experience mapped to the AoME/GMC’s professional standards frameworks for supervisors.
  • A small-group learning environment where you can actively participate and share perspectives with others who have a keen interest in education and professional experience to draw upon.  This includes clinical peers such as our Diploma-Master’s students who are engaging at significant depth with clinical education through our wider programme.
  • A letter of attendance for the short course.

You can also take this course for Master’s level university credit provided successful completion of its assessment.  If interested please enquire when applying.

The Developing Educational Supervisors short course is led by Dr. Kirsten Dalrymple, Dr. Lisa Miller and Dr. John Launer.  It takes place at Imperial’s St Mary’s Campus in central London.

Who is the short course for?

This course is suitable for those with significant clinical experience (e.g. those near the end of training or consultants), a demonstrated interest in education and in the short course topics.  A formal qualification in clinical education, is not required, but would your facilitate learning.

Those who select the credit-bearing assessed route will receive academic supervision with formative feedback and access to Imperial’s electronic library collections.

Successful completion of the assessments enables you to bank credits that can be applied to approved Master’s level courses in the future. Candidates wishing to apply credits to degree awarding programmes must fulfil the appropriate admissions requirements.

Our assessed short courses offer significant additional value to a certificate of attendance for CPD.  Beyond the academic credits accrued, participants electing to complete the assessments will have produced a Master’s level educational curriculum design around the short course topic area they participated in and these can be brought back and considered for implementation in the workplace.

If you are interested in running the Designing Educational Supervisors short course on another occasion, please contact Kirsten at k.dalrymple@imperial.ac.uk to discuss.
