2025 Pakistan Mountaineering

In September–October 2025, an eight-person team which included one Imperial student, undertook a mountaineering expedition in the Chalt Valley, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. The group established a basecamp at 3,400m near the Baltar and Toltar glaciers, supported by local porters and shepherds. The trip began with logistical challenges and extended bad weather, which delayed climbing plans and led to eight days of snowbound rest. During this time, the team engaged with local communities, sharing food, learning traditions, and improving camp life.

Three climbing objectives were pursued once conditions improved. The first team attempted the unclimbed peak Munocho (~5,800m) via its East Face and North-East ridge, reaching 5,600m before retreating. The second team aimed to cross a col west of Sani Pakkush (6,951m) but turned back in deep snow. A third team achieved the expedition’s major success: a probable first ascent of Akbar Chhok (6,673m) via a demanding 3,000m route graded M6, WI5, A2. Their climb spanned nine days, including a summit bivouac.

The expedition highlighted both the physical challenges of high-altitude climbing and the cultural richness of the region. Encounters with shepherds, traditional bread-making, and shared hospitality defined the experience as much as the climbing itself. Despite setbacks, the trip strengthened ties between international climbers and local communities, laying groundwork for future exploration in adjacent valleys. The journey underscored the unpredictability of Himalayan expeditions and the enduring value of resilience, teamwork, and cross-cultural exchange.
