The AI4URBAN-HEALTH Network: AI solutions to urban health using a place-based approach

Our cities and towns are facing increasing challenges related to public health, sustainability, and climate change. The environments we live in significantly impact our physical and mental well-being, yet we often lack the tools to understand and improve these complex urban systems effectively. Urban planners, policymakers, and communities need innovative ways to create healthier, more sustainable living spaces. However, the interactions between urban environments, human health, and sustainability are highly complex and interconnected, making it difficult to predict the outcomes of interventions or policy changes.

The AI4URBAN-HEALTH Network aims to revolutionise how we design and manage urban environments to promote better health and sustainability. We will bring together experts from diverse fields including artificial intelligence (AI), health sciences, urban planning, and environmental studies. Our goal is to develop advanced AI tools that can analyse complex urban systems and predict the impacts of changes, while also creating a framework that involves communities in shaping their environments through inclusive decision-making.

To create actionable solutions, we will take a place-based approach using three case studies - Bradford, Guildford, and London - to bring key communities and stakeholders together. These case studies will act as learning opportunities and test beds to inform future work to scale up AI-generated solutions to various cities and towns.

Funding

We have a flexible fund for feasibility and proof of concept studies open to researchers eligible for UKRI funding from ECRs to more established academics. Join our Network to receive information as it is released.

We focus on five key application areas across our network activities and in our case studies: (i) indoor spaces, (ii) urban planning, (iii) urban management, (iv) energy systems, and (v) transport infrastructure.
