Explicit robust multi-model predictive control
, Pages: 1868-1873The paper deals with robust predictive control based on a LMI approach. With respect to the well established case of linear models, with a global polytopic uncertainty, in the present approach the conservativeness reduction is assured by allowing different local descriptions of the uncertainty. The prediction model can thus be interpreted as a multi-model description of the plant to be controlled. The techniques is effective for a large class of nonlinear systems embedded into polytopic models. For the practical implementation the construction of suitable (explicit) descriptions of the control law are described upon concrete algorithms. © 2008 IEEE.

On the modelling adequacy of the DFIG for small signal stability studies in power systems
, IET Journal of Renewable Power Generation, Vol: 2, Pages: 181-190The dynamics of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) with a closed-loop control is analysed. The analysis provides explanations of the impact of the closed-loop control on the DFIG dynamics and relevant modelling requirements for power system stability studies. The discussion considers generic PI controllers for the regulation of rotor speed, reactive power and pitch angle. It is shown that for the closed-loop-controlled DFIG, a simplified model, whereby both stator and rotor dynamics are neglected, is adequate. In such model, stator and rotor variables are algebraic, that is, they change instantaneously and the modelled dynamics are those of the controllers and mechanical parts. The observations and conclusions are obtained from eigenvalue, participation factor and time-domain analysis.

Input-to-state stability of robust receding horizon control with an expected value cost
, Automatica, Vol: 44, ISSN: 1873-2836This paper is concerned with the stability of a class of receding horizon control (RHC) laws for constrained linear discrete-time systems subject to bounded state disturbances and convex state and input constraints. The paper considers the class of finite horizon feedback control policies parameterized as affine functions of the system state, calculation of which can be shown to be tractable via a convex reparameterization. When minimizing the expected value of a finite horizon quadratic cost, we show that the value function is convex. When solving this optimal control problem at each time step and implementing the result in a receding horizon fashion, we provide sufficient conditions under which the closed-loop system is input-to-state stable (ISS).

Evaluating the capacity value of wind generation in systems with hydro generation
Wind generation is envisaged to be a major contributor for meeting the targets for renewable energy and environment in various countries. However, the limited contribution of this generation source to system reliability requires increased capacity margins (generation capacity above system's maximum demand). This paper investigates the potential impact on the capacity value of wind generation due to the presence of hydro generation in systems. In order to quantify the adequacy of the overall generation capacity and capacity credit of wind generation in wind-hydro-thermal systems a new methodology based on loss of load expectation (LOLE) is developed. Various studies performed through implementing the new methodology establish that the capacity credit of wind generation can increase by up to 10% due to the support of hydro generation.

Current source ballast for high power lighting emitting diodes without electrolytic capacitor
, IECON Proceedings Industrial Electronics Conference, Pages: 1968-1973An LED driver requiring no electrolytic capacitor in the whole power conversion process is presented. It consists of two power conversion stages. The first stage is a buck converter operating in discontinuous capacitor voltage mode, so that the input current is continuous. It is used to deliver a regulated current for the second stage. The second stage is a current-fed inverter, in which the semiconductor switches are operated at constant switching frequency and constant duty cycle of 0.5. The power supplying to the LED string is regulated by controlling the duty cycle of the main switch in the front-stage buck converter. The two stages are interconnected by an LC filter, which is designed to attenuate harmonics at double of the line frequency. Instead of using an electrolytic capacitor for the filter, a polyester capacitor of better lifetime expectancy is used. An 18W experimental prototype has been built and tested. © 2008 IEEE.
