In July 2025, a team of climbers undertook a two-week expedition to Bosnia and Herzegovina, focusing on the Romanija region. The team aimed to support local climbing development, perform first ascents, project challenging routes, and document climbs for online platforms like UKC and 27 Crags.
The expedition was centered around Crvene Stijene, a stunning limestone crag with immense potential. Under the guidance of a local route developer and a forester, the team learned about ethical route development, cleaned and climbed new lines, and contributed to path maintenance. Notable achievements included the first ascent of Može Može (6b/+), a collaborative effort that became a personal project for several team members.
Beyond climbing, the team immersed themselves in Bosnian culture, visiting Sarajevo’s historic sites, including the Museum of Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide, and exploring towns like Konjic and Mostar. They also climbed at Velike Stijene and Drežnica, experiencing both the natural beauty and the challenges of high summer temperatures. Pre-expedition training included rope rescue and outdoor first aid courses, and the team emphasized safety, sustainability, and cultural respect throughout. They followed “leave no trace” principles and avoided disturbing wildlife, including nesting falcons.
Despite budget challenges, the team managed logistics efficiently and borrowed gear where possible. The expedition report concludes with gratitude to local collaborators and sponsors, highlighting the expedition’s success in fostering international climbing development, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. The team plans to return and continue developing routes, sharing their experiences to inspire future climbers.
In addition to funding provided by the Exploration Board this expedition was supported by the Old Centralians' Trust, the Lord Mayor's 800th Anniversary Awards Trust, Jeremy Willson Charitable Trust and the The Young Explorers’ Trust.
