2025 Finnmark Ski Touring

In April 2025, a team of four students undertook a pioneering ski and sail expedition in the remote Finnmark region of Arctic Norway. Combining backcountry ski touring with sailboat-based logistics, the team explored the islands and fjords around Øksfjord, Stjernøya, and Seiland, aiming to document first descents, develop technical skills, and promote sustainable adventure travel.

Over 11 days the team covered over 100km and ascended over 9,000m, navigating challenging maritime alpine terrain. The expedition was supported by experienced guides and sailors. A key moment came mid-trip when warming weather and rising avalanche risk forced a reroute from Seiland and Stjernøya to safer zones in Sandland and Bergsfjord. This pivot demonstrated the team’s adaptability and decision-making under pressure.

The expedition emphasized environmental responsibility, adhering to Leave No Trace principles, sourcing second-hand gear, and offsetting flight emissions through verified reforestation projects. The team also engaged in avalanche and ski touring training in Scotland prior to departure, ensuring safety and competence in Arctic conditions. Documentation was a core component, with GPS tracking, drone footage, and photography used to record routes and conditions. 

Living aboard the sailboat “Moondance,” the team accessed remote terrain directly from the water, using tenders for shore transfers. They faced logistical challenges, including limited resupply options and unpredictable weather, but overcame these through teamwork and local support. The expedition concluded with several self-guided summit tours, showcasing the team’s growth in autonomy and technical skill. Key takeaways included the importance of contingency planning, avalanche education, and sustainable practices.
