2025 Peru Trekking

In summer 2025 two students undertook a six-week expedition to Peru’s Cordillera Blanca, aiming to complete the Cordillera Blanca Traverse (CBT) and climb high-altitude peaks. The CBT is a demanding 400 km route spanning the length of the range, crossing over 20 passes between 4,347 m and 5,201 m, with a cumulative elevation gain of 25,000m. Despite an initial setback, the team successfully completed the traverse in 16 hiking days, split into four stages, and navigated challenging terrain including scree slopes, snowed-up gullies, and technical passes.

The expedition also achieved its mountaineering objectives. Both climbers summited Pisco (5,752 m) via the Southwest Ridge, a classic acclimatisation peak offering panoramic views of the Blanca. One member further climbed Chopicalqui (6,354 m) in a single push with another partner, tackling steep crevassed slopes a during a 14-hour ascent and descent. The final days were spent sport climbing at Hatun Machay, a high-altitude volcanic rock forest renowned for its unique routes and archaeological significance.

Challenges included prolonged exposure to altitude, logistical hurdles, and unpredictable weather windows. The team adapted by adjusting routes, repairing gear mid-expedition, and leveraging local knowledge. They reported mixed physiological responses to altitude, lingering fatigue, and occasional technical scares, but no major injuries. The experience reinforced the Cordillera Blanca’s appeal as a premier destination for trekking and mountaineering, combining accessibility with remote beauty. The trip strengthened alpine skills and deepened appreciation for high-altitude environments, leaving the team eager for future expeditions and scientific engagement.
