This expedition entailed a 14-day high-altitude trekking and mountaineering venture around the Monte Rosa massif, undertaken by a team in summer 2025. The route, known as the Tour Monte Rosa (TMR), spans approximately 165km through Switzerland and Italy, combining classic hut-to-hut stages with wild camping and alpine terrain. The team also summited the Breithorn (4,164 m), a notable 4000m peak, as part of their mountaineering objectives. Starting in Zermatt, the group followed a clockwise circuit, crossing high passes, glaciers, and valleys, with varied terrain ranging from rocky trails to snow-covered slopes.
The expedition aimed to develop mountaineering skills, foster teamwork, and document the journey for outreach and educational purposes. The team faced logistical challenges including route closures due to landslides, unpredictable weather, and demanding ascents—most notably an 1,800m climb from Alagna to Staffel. Despite these, they adapted with resilience and camaraderie. Notable moments include glacier crossings, alpine lake swims, and celebratory meals.
The final days involved navigating foggy conditions and making safety-based decisions to avoid glacier crossings. The experience was transformative for the team, enhancing their physical endurance, outdoor leadership, and appreciation for alpine environments.
In addition to funding provided by the Exploration Board this expedition was supported by the Lord Mayor's 800th Anniversary Awards Trust, the Old Centralians' Trust and the Royal College of Science Association Trust.
