AB - Arainfallerosivityschemeisimplementedintothewidely-used regionalatmosphere-landmodel,WRF.Rainfallerosivityisparameterisedfromhourlyprecipitationandsurfacerunoffinahighresolution(4km)convection-permittingmodel.TheschemeisusedtoexaminethepotentialeffectsofchangesinatmosphericaerosolconcentrationsonsoilerosioninacasestudyofnorthernIndia andthesurroundingcountriesforthe2010monsoonseason,usingamodelwhichisolatestheindirecteffectoncloudmicrophysicsonly. Thisstudy offers apreliminaryinvestigationintothis emergingtopic,butlongersimulationswouldbeneededtoestablisharobustsignal.Summerprecipitationisreducedinmostareasandthe monsooncirculation weakens forincreases incloudcondensationnuclei concentrations. ThiscanbeattributedtolocalisedcloudmicrophysicalchangesinthenortheastofIndia,which induceadynamicresponseopposingthemonsooncirculation. Thetworegionsofgreatestdecreaseinerosion withincreasingaerosolarein theWesternGhatsandtheGangesDelta,bothsignificantcroplandareas.However,theeffectisnotuniform, withisolatedlocal increases insoilerosion. Theseresultssuggestthat,while effortstoreduceanthropogenicaerosolemissionsmayimprovewateravailabilityforcropsthroughenhancedrainfall,thesebenefitsarelikelytobetemperedbyanincreasein soilerosion,though robustlocalchangesweredifficulttopredict.
