Fault detection and isolation for linear discrete-time systems using input/output measurement analysis
, IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, Publisher: IEEE, Pages: 4908-4913, ISSN: 0191-2216In this work, a new approach to fault detection and isolation is proposed for linear discrete-time systems subject to faults and bounded additive disturbances using a system model, together with input/output measurements over a finite estimation horizon. We use the proposed method to compute upper and lower bounds on the faults. These bounds are the tightest possible given the system model, input/output measurements and the bounds on the initial state and disturbances. Linear programming optimization techniques are used to obtain the bounds. Moreover, a subsequent-state-estimation technique, together with an estimation horizon update procedure are given to allow the fault detection and isolation process to be repeated in an iterative procedure. Finally, the approach is verified using a numerical example.

MEMS Energy Harvesting Powered Wireless Biometric Sensor
, Wearable and Implantable Body Sensor Networks, 2009. BSN 2009. Sixth International Workshop on, Pages: 207-212One of the main challenges in developing wireless biometric sensors is the requirement for integration of various systems into a very compact device. Such systems include sensing units, conditioning electronics, transmitters and power supplies. In this work, a novel system integration architecture is presented. A unique feature of this new architecture is that the sub-systems are selected and designed for direct output-to-input connection. An array of active pH sensors is used to transform a pH level to an electrical potential in the range of 0 - 2 Volts. This signal is amplified by an electrostatic energy harvester suitable for human motion operation. The amplified signal drives a custom LC transmitter specially designed to suit the harvester output. A system of notable simplicity is achieved and may serve as a demonstrator for other wireless sensors.

Robust multi-model predictive control using LMIs
, ISSN: 1474-6670This paper proposes a novel robust predictive control synthesis technique for constrained nonlinear systems based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) formalism. Local discrete-time polytopic models have been exploited for prediction of the system behavior. This design strategy can be applied to a wide class of nonlinear systems provided a suitable embedding is available. The devised procedure guarantees constraint satisfaction and asymptotic stability. The proposed result extends previous works by allowing different local descriptions of nonlinearity and uncertainty and by handling less conservative input constraints. The multimodel prediction shows significant improvements in terms of closed-loop performance and estimation of the feasibility domain.
