Students can borrow the following equipment  e.g. laptops, evaluation boards, audio-visual equipment and other equipment on request. 

When borrowing equipment, you are fully responsible for its proper use, care, and timely return.  

If you fail to return the equipment after several attempts for us to recover it: 

  • You may receive a Formal Letter stating that:
    • You’ve failed to return the equipment on time.
    • A fine will be issued to cover the replacement cost.
    • The incident may be recorded on your student record.
    • Your academic records (like transcripts or certificates) may be withheld.
    • You may lose borrowing privileges for other equipment.
  • If you return the equipment within 7 days of the formal letter, the fine will be cancelled, but the incident will stay on record.

Loan equipment falls into four defined categories: items required for coursework, items that support project work, equipment issued for exam support, and a small number of items available for general issue.

Before borrowing

  • Complete the equipment loan request (link below) before coming to Stores.
  • Bring your Imperial ID.

Laptop loan rules

  • Loans are made on a first-come, first-served basis for one 3.5-hour session: 09.00–12.30 or 13.00–16.30.
  • When all laptops are on loan, students are placed on a first-come, first-served waiting list.
  • A consecutive loan period is possible only when nobody else is waiting.
  • Laptops are stored in Stores and are available only during Stores opening hours.
  • Laptops are charged overnight and their contents are erased. Students should save their work elsewhere before returning them.
  • Overnight loans are not available.
  • (The current page says “workstations” may not be removed from the Department. Confirm which equipment this means and state clearly where each type of equipment may be used).
  • (Late return results in temporary loss of borrowing privileges. Check the details)
  • Every borrower must accept responsibility for the equipment. The borrower must meet the cost of loss or damage.
