About this study

This study tests whether a community-led campaign can increase breast cancer screening attendance among underserved groups in Hounslow. The study is coordinated by Imperial College London and funded by NIHR Public Health Research Scheme (Number: 164908) and is supported by the London Borough of Hounslow.

The intervention uses resources informed by behavioural science and an understanding of barriers to screening in underserved groups and designed through co-design workshops with women in Hounslow.  Resources include bus stop adverts, posters, leaflets, wallet cards, and an animated video. The intervention resources will be shared by trained community champions, and other community engagement activities through the local authority.

A diverse group of women from Hounslow have been recruited as community champions, and training began in January 2026.  Over a 6-month period, community champions in Hounslow will share culturally tailored resources about breast cancer screening through trusted local networks, and there will also be bus stop adverts and social media campaigns of the videos.

Data Analysis

The study will measure screening uptake using NHS data and also gather insights through short surveys with women attending screening and in the community. In order to assess uptake, we will be accessing breast screening data and linking this with NHS data on ethnicity, for women who are invited to screening between January 2026-January 2027, and who live in Hounslow (intervention Borough), or Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, and Islington (comparator boroughs). For information on how your data is used, please see our Patient Notification Document.
