How can we ensure mass balance and book & claim systems accelerate deep decarbonisation of heavy industry while mitigating risks and unlocking demand?

Imperial College London's Leonardo Centre will host Mission Possible Partnership, RMI, and other representatives from industry, standard-setting organisations, academia, and civil society to discuss how innovative chain-of-custody systems are being explored and implemented across high-emitting sectors.

Mass balance and book & claim systems can provide producers and buyers with greater flexibility in assigning environmental attributes, such as greenhouse gas emissions reductions or recycled content, to traded products.

These approaches can help stimulate early demand for low‑emission materials and products, particularly where physically segregated supply chains are costly, complex, or not yet feasible.

Robust tracking, transparent reporting, independent verification, and clear claims guidance are essential to prevent double-counting, misleading claims, and weak environmental integrity.

Participants will gain cross-sector insights into why different chain-of-custody approaches are being adopted, how they are being designed, and how they can support credible demand for low-emission products such as steel, cement, chemicals, fuels, and other industrial materials.

Who should attend?

Working level practitioners in heavy industry and transport, standard setters, and academic institutions and civil society.

Which sectors?

Steel, Cement & Concrete, Aluminium, Ammonia, Methanol, Aviation, Heavy Transport, CCUS
