CHEPI Team

The Centre for Health Economics & Policy Innovation (CHEPI) is a global leader in research and teaching on health economics, policy, and management.

Our work focuses on the incentives shaping productivity, quality, and innovation in healthcare systems and organisations, as well as the factors influencing individual health behaviours and the effectiveness of government health policies.

"CHEPI’s mission is to generate evidence on how incentives and environments shape health-related decisions at the individual, organisational, and policy levels. We work closely with businesses and governments to design policies that embed these incentives and foster healthier societies"

Our Impact

CHEPI’s research has shaped global policy and practice in key areas:

  • Obesity and Nutrition: CHEPI led the STOP project, a landmark study on childhood obesity, and now leads work packages in three new European Commission-funded projects—CoDiet, JACARDI, and OBCT—which develop innovative policy solutions for non-communicable diseases.
  • Pharmaceutical Innovation and Pricing: CHEPI secured Gatsby Foundation funding to explore innovation and productivity in the pharmaceutical industry and leads research on pharmaceutical pricing as part of the European Hi-Prix project.
  • Health Taxation: Our research has influenced policies on food taxes and product reformulation, informing national and international debates, including through WHO and World Bank publications.
  • Healthcare Innovation: CHEPI contributed to the UK’s second-largest philanthropic grant (£29M from the Gatsby Foundation), supporting the creation of the Centre for Sectoral Economic Performance, where we lead projects on R&D productivity in the UK biopharma sector.
  • Climate and Health: CHEPI researchers are at the forefront of assessing the economic impacts of carbon pricing and air pollution on public health.
  • Pandemic Preparedness: CHEPI is a key partner in the Jameel Institute-Kenneth C. Griffin Initiative for the Economics of Pandemic Preparedness, collaborating with the WHO and global institutions to improve pandemic response strategies.

Our Influence

CHEPI’s research has been cited in policy documents by 19 governments across Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, as well as by major organisations such as the World Bank, WHO, and the UK Department of Health. Our faculty regularly contribute to Parliamentary inquiries, high-profile policy debates, and international forums.

As we expand our research and partnerships, CHEPI remains committed to delivering policy-relevant insights that drive meaningful change in global health and economic policy.
