Our research

Imperial College Business School is renowned for its strong commitment to world-class research

Imperial College London has the highest proportion of world-leading and internationally excellent research of any UK university: 91 per cent of College research activity has been judged as world-leading or internationally excellent (namely the proportion of research activity rated 4* or 3* in the Research Excellent Framework, REF).

This success is replicated within Imperial College Business School: we submitted 94 per cent of eligible faculty for the most recent REF, which we believe is substantially higher than many comparator institutions:

  • 92 per cent of the School’s research assessed by peer review in the REF was classed as "world-leading" (4*) or "internationally excellent" (3*).This was the highest proportion achieved by any institution in the Business & Management category and improves on our 2008 result of 85 per cent.
  • 49 per cent of our research was assessed as 4*; the 2008 result was 35 per cent.
  • 89 per cent of our research outputs were deemed to be 4* and 3*, which places Imperial College Business School ahead of all other institutions in business and management.
'These REF results confirm Imperial’s status as one of the world’s great research universities. It is gratifying to see the outstanding work of so many colleagues acknowledged in this way…. Government support has enabled UK universities like Imperial to compete with the best in the world. To keep this position and to harness the impact of universities in building a dynamic and innovative economy, targeted and sustainable investment is essential.’
