Reassessment

If you have failed a module during the regular examination period and do not have approved mitigating circumstances for that module, you will normally be given an opportunity to take an in-session resit, depending on how many modules you have passed and the nature of the module. 

This normally means taking a resit during the August resit period of the same academic year. 

The EEE Exams Team will contact you after the Board of Examiners’ meeting to confirm: 

• the module or modules requiring a resit 

• whether the resit is capped or uncapped. (Resits without MCs are always capped at the pass mark and resits with MCs are uncapped. 

• the format of the resit 

• whether it will take place in the current academic year or the following year 

• where relevant, whether you need to resit in attendance or not in attendance 

To pass the module, you must achieve the required pass mark in the resit. 

In-session resits are not offered for: 

• Electronics Design Project 1 

• Electronics Design Project 2 

• the Year 3 Group Project 

This is because the nature of these modules requires attendance and cannot be replicated for an in-session resit in August. 

If you do not pass the module during the August resit period and do not have approved mitigating circumstances for the module, you may be offered one further opportunity in the following academic year. 

This depends on factors including the number of previous attempts and whether you can complete your degree within the University’s maximum period of registration: 

• BEng: maximum of five years from initial registration 

• MEng: maximum of six years from initial registration 

A resit in the following academic year may be: 

Retake (In attendance) 
You attend all the teaching activities for the module and submit all assessments. 

Resit (Not in attendance) 
You return only to take the required resit, usually an exam. In this case, the final module mark is based solely on the resit. 

Capped and uncapped resits 

Where a resit is capped, the final credited mark cannot exceed the module pass mark. 

The current pass marks are: 

• 40% for level 4–6 modules, normally Years 1–3; 

• 50% for level 7 modules, including most Year 4 modules. 

If you have approved mitigating circumstances and this is treated as your first attempt to pass the module, your mark will normally be uncapped. The final module mark will be calculated using the relevant module components.

Depending on the number and nature of the modules you have failed, you may be offered an in-session resit during the same academic year. 

The current guidance states that only one resit is permitted during the August resit period for MSc students. 

If you need to do a reassessment in one module, this will take place during the August resit period. 

If you need to do reassessment for two or more modules, you will be required to return in the following academic year to complete those reassessments.  

Multiple resits cannot be undertaken during the August period because MSc students are completing individual research projects at that time, which accounts for 50% of the overall degree mark. 

Retake (In attendance) 
You attend all teaching activities for the module and submit all assessments. The module mark is calculated using all relevant components. 

Resit (Not in attendance) 
You return only to take the resit, usually an exam. The module mark is based solely on that resit. 

The August resit exam period takes place over two weeks in August. Depending on the calendar, these may be the second and third weeks of August or the final two weeks. 

The exact dates vary each year. 

The August resit timetable cannot be confirmed until after the July Board of Examiners’ meeting, because the Department must first know which students need to sit each exam. 

The timetable is normally published towards the end of July or beginning of August, and affected students are contacted by email. 

All EEE resit exams take place on campus. 

You must therefore be available to return to Imperial to take your exam. It is not possible for you to take resit exams remotely. 

You cannot retake an assessment that you have passed in order to obtain a higher mark. 

All EEE examinations are held on campus. We cannot accommodate requests to sit an EEE exam remotely. 

If you are on an industrial placement and need to take a resit, you must still return to campus to sit the exam. 

The current guidance advises students who may need an August resit to keep annual-leave days available so that they can attend.

Undergraduate students 

The current guidance states that you can usually take resits for a module twice.  All resits must be taken at the first available opportunity.  The first opportunity is normally the August resit period following confirmation of your original results.  If you still do not pass, you may then be able to return in the following academic year for one final attempt, which may be as a resit-not-in-attendance student.  Decisions about which resits are offered are made by the Board of Examiners.  If you choose not to take an offered resit opportunity, you forfeit that attempt. 

MSc students 

If you need to resit one module, this normally takes place during the August resit period.  If you need to resit two or more modules, you will be required to return in the following academic year.  Decisions about resit opportunities are made following the relevant Boards of Examiners.  If you choose not to take an offered resit opportunity, you forfeit that attempt. 

If you take a resit in the following academic year, you will be made aware of any syllabus changes and provided with the material you need for the current syllabus where this is not already available online. 

You will be examined on the material currently being taught. 

Contact the module leader for any module you are resitting to make sure you have access to everything you need. 

If you are an international student with a student visa and need to return to the UK to take a resit in the following academic year, you may need to apply for fresh entry clearance. 

You should contact International Student Support for advice, including guidance about whether you need a new CAS and any visa application you need to make.

Results from the August resit period are released after the September Board of Examiners’ meeting and after the outcomes of that meeting have been processed. 

The September Board usually takes place on the first Friday of September. 

After the meeting, time is needed to process the decisions and make sure everything is accurate. Then we will return the results and degree classifications to Registry. 

Full results, including your degree classification if you are a final-year student or confirmation of progression if you are continuing your studies, are officially released by Registry once all the marks and decisions have been processed. We would usually expect you to have access to your results by the Friday one week after the Board of Examiners' Meeting.
