What is Job Evaluation?

Job evaluation is a systematic process of determining a job's grade by evaluating the responsibilities and duties.

It is University policy that all new job descriptions, and, where appropriate, substantially changed positions (as determined by a line manager in consultation with their People Function representative) require job evaluation. Job descriptions that have been previously evaluated do not need to be submitted again for re-evaluation unless significant revisions have been made.

How are jobs evaluated?

Jobs are evaluated by a panel of Imperial staff, trained in using the HAY job evaluation methodology. A weekly Job Evaluation review meeting takes place every Tuesday morning.

Senior Academic (Reader & Professor level) and Levels 6/7 Professional Services or Learning & Teaching Job Family roles should be forwarded to the relevant People Partner in the first instance for evaluation.

How to request a job evaluation

The line managers request job evaluation, and they are required to submit the relevant paperwork to the Job Evaluation Panel by Friday at 12:00 noon.

Documents required for the application

To request a job evaluation, the following paperwork is required:

  • Job Description & Person Specification with tracked changes
  • Organisation chart
  • Benchmark against an existing job description
  • Any background or context information for the Job Evaluation Panel
  • The line manager will submit the paperwork to the job evaluation panel by Friday at 12:00 noon.
  • The changes will be considered at the following week's meeting on Tuesday.
  • The Job Evaluation Panel will inform the line manager of the outcome by 5 pm Friday that week.

Please contact your People Function or Recruitment representative if you require assistance developing or amending the job description and person specification to reflect your intentions.

Job Evaluation Process

Please note that if we receive more than 15 job evaluation requests in one week, some jobs may need to be evaluated at the next Job Evaluation meeting. In this instance, we will advise the relevant line manager ASAP.

Please send all your queries regarding Job Evaluation to the Job Evaluation Panel email. We ask that you refrain from sending multiple 'chaser' emails to this mailbox and/or individuals. The team will keep line managers updated on the progress and outcome(s) as appropriate.
