2016 Cycle USA report [pdf]

The aim for the two team members, one of whom was an Imperial student, was to predominantly cycle from Boston on the east coast of the USA to Portland, Oregon, on the west coast. This was to undertaken from early July to early August, and the majority of the route was to follow the low traffic Adventure Cycling Route Network, which would include many famous sights and areas, as well as varied scenery and culture. In addition, the route included camping and lodging points and also provided a suitable path through the Rocky Mountains.

Before setting off, the pair were able to spend a day touring Boston and to fit in a trip to Harvard. Their route then took them to Amherst, following the Mass Central Rail Trail through the Massachusetts forest, then onto Albany, having crossed the Hudson River. The end of the next day brought them to Scenectady where they camped next to the Mohawk River. The route proceeded along the Mohawk Hudson Canal Trail, then through Utica and Rome to Syracuse. Newark was the next overnight stop before the pair headed to Buffalo and Niagara.

During their travels the pair had to cope with a wrist injury, a collision, being knocked of their bikes by strong winds, and unintentionally leaving the road onto a hazardous embankment.
