The expedition aim was to hike the entire length of the GR20 trail, one of the most challenging alpine treks in Europe for its length and duration, across the central mountain range of the beautiful island of Corsica. The intention was to complete the trail in 15 days or fewer, whilst also admiring the scenery, the mountains, and creating a photographic record of the journey.

The team, comprised of 5 Imperial undergraduates, started the 180km route at Calenzana, (275m), in the north-west. They undertook their hike in September 2017, when the hiking routes were quieter, the climate was still warm, and there was a lower chance of dangerous summer storms. The trail is considered treacherous underfoot, with most of it along scree covered slopes with no natural path, however the route is marked with red and white flashes painted at certain points. The group planned to camp during the expedition, but there were refuges along the way which provided some facilities and sold food.

The highest ascent of the trek of 1,295m was made on the first day and at times involved scrambling up steep inclines, a small few of which provided chains for assistance, whilst on the second day the group had to negotiate a forest. Some of the route ascents were technical big rock slabs, boulders, and gullies, and some climbs were followed by slow steep descents which were demanding on the knees. One of days was spent in a refuge due to storms, and torrential rain persisted for one night’s camping, which caused water to pool under the tents and to wet many clothing items, as well as causing the temperature to drop considerably. A second night brought hail and thunder storms which left the mountain covered in ice and snow the next morning. On day 15 the team reached the village of Conca, (252m), the end of the GR20.

Expedition highlights included the team diverging off the GR20 trail to summit Monte Cinto, (2,706m), the highest point on Corsica, signing the book there and enjoying the spectacular views; encountering a group of 80 Belgian paratroopers for large parts of the route who at times left behind boxes of ration pack snacks for other trekkers, to which the team availed themselves; and swimming in the lakes and rivers on the route.
