The human side of system change - it starts with people
Markets do not change themselves. Businesses do not transform themselves. People do.
Every strategy, investment decision, innovation programme and policy initiative depends on individuals making choices in complex and uncertain environments. That is why meaningful change requires more than new frameworks or regulations. It requires new ways of thinking, leading and acting.
Building Individual Impact Maturity
Within this pathway, our research focuses on what we call Individual Impact Maturity: the ability to translate values into sustained action.
This involves more than awareness. It requires:
- Systems thinking
- Emotional resilience
- Long-term orientation
- Self-awareness
- The ability to influence others and drive change
We test what actually builds these capacities through randomised controlled trials and pre/post assessments across MBA, Executive MBA and executive education settings, tracking real shifts in resilience, stress, empathy and decision-making under pressure. Our 12-week Sustainability Leadership programme, which has reached more than 1,000 practitioners and received the Financial Times Responsible Business Education Award in 2023, is where this research is put into practice.
From awareness to action
Many people already understand today's sustainability challenges.
The real challenge is acting consistently when decisions involve uncertainty, complexity and trade-offs. Research shows that reflective and inner-development practices can strengthen the mental and emotional capacities that support lasting behavioural change.
These capabilities are increasingly important in a world shaped by rapid technological change, growing complexity and rising expectations of leadership.
The goal
Our ambition is to help develop leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, policymakers and citizens who can create change not only within organisations, but across entire systems — because a flourishing economy ultimately depends on the quality of human decisions.
