Academic Promotion Champions at NHLI

At the NHLI, we believe in fostering an inclusive and diverse academic community that celebrates the unique talents, perspectives, and backgrounds of all its members. We recognize the vital importance of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the process of academic promotion.

In NHLI we have established an informal network of 'Promotion Champions' who are academic staff that have recently successfully navigated the academic promotion process. This network serves as a platform to provide support for individuals seeking academic promotion. Our Academic Promotion Champions can offer practical advice and support based on their own experience and lessons learned. By connecting with a Promotion Champion, you can gain invaluable perspectives and insights into the promotion process, supporting your chances of achieving your career goals.

Our Promotion Champions can be contacted on an individual basis, find their details below.

Please note that this is informal help and peer support from colleagues who have recently experienced the promotions process. It is not meant to replace the formal guidance provided by College and the support and advice from your line manager and the promotion panels at every level.

Equality in academic promotions

Academic promotion should be based solely on an individual's merits, accomplishments, and contributions to their field of expertise. Ensuring equality means removing any biases or discriminatory practices that could hinder the advancement of deserving candidates. By prioritizing equal opportunities, we can create a more vibrant and enriched academic landscape where everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

Academic promotion is not just about recognising excellence, it's also about embracing diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds. A diverse faculty and staff bring a wide range of expertise, ideas, and approaches to research, teaching, and service. It is through diversity that we can tackle complex challenges, foster innovative thinking, and inspire groundbreaking discoveries.

Inclusion is the cornerstone of a thriving academic community. By cultivating an inclusive environment, we ensure that all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique skills and talents. Inclusive academic promotion practices promote collaboration, teamwork, and the exchange of ideas, ultimately leading to enhanced productivity and creativity across disciplines.

We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to excel in academia, regardless of their background or personal circumstances. By embracing equality, diversity, and inclusion in academic promotion, we can create an environment that nurtures talent, celebrates differences, and fosters excellence.

NHLI's Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee meet to discuss and improve upon issues pertaining to EDI across the Department.
