Are you looking to engage new audiences with your research? Are you keen to ensure your engagement activities are as inclusive and accessible as possible?
In this brand-new session (part of our series of Engagement Masterclasses), we will help you to identify the key areas of inclusion for your engagement activities, and to find resources and tools to help you as you plan. By considering a variety of different scenarios you will develop confidence in addressing inclusion issues throughout your engagement, underpinned by equity, diversity and inclusion principles.
We strongly recommend you complete our Core Engagement masterclass before attending our Making Public Engagement Inclusive Masterclass.
Key areas covered
This session will cover:
- An introduction to inclusion in an engagement context
- Consideration of the positionality of the people and organisations involved, and the role of power and privilege when thinking about inclusive engagement
- Practical tips for how we can create welcoming and inclusive spaces, in person and online, acknowledging the limits of available resources
- Signposting to the support you might want for taking your inclusion further
Who is this session for?
This session is available to Imperial staff members, doctoral students and postgraduate research masters students who have attended our Core Engagement Masterclass or similar training, or have equivalent experience in carrying out public engagement.
If you are unsure about whether this session is for you, please contact the Societal Engagement team.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this session, you will be better able to:
- Plan engagement activities that are inclusive of a diverse range of people
- Explain and communicate your access and inclusion practices to project partners and participants
- Find the help you need to make your work as inclusive as possible
How to book your place
This course is free, but please see the terms and conditions of booking on the registration form. Places are limited and will be booked first come, first served with a waiting list. Book your place by completing this form.
Doctoral Students: Please note the sign up through Inkpath looks slightly different to some other Early Career Researcher Institute courses. This is because this Masterclass is open to Imperial staff, research degree students and postgraduate research masters students.

Further information
Do I need to attend the Core Engagement Masterclass first to book onto other engagement master classes?
We strongly advise you attend this masterclass before completing our other masterclasses, especially if you have little or no experience of public engagement. This is so you are provided with the necessary foundation and context.
Where will the session take place?
This session will be held in-person on our South Kensington campus. If you are unable to attend in-person or would like to explore the options for training at an alternative campus, please contact us so that we can assess demand and discuss your needs.
Engagement activities supporting teaching and learning practice
Please note that engagement activities that may support teaching and learning practice can be used to support your application for Advance Higher Education fellowship via Imperial’s STAR framework.
