How can you embed participatory research in your research? What are the considerations you need to make when planning and facilitating a participatory approach?

In this masterclass you will explore the benefits of engaging the public in participatory research, when it is appropriate to take this approach in your research and the key considerations to ensure responsible research and innovation. You will explore power dynamics and how to build trust, through participating in group activities and reviewing case studies.

We strongly recommend you complete our Core Engagement masterclass before attending our Participatory Research masterclass.

Key Areas covered

  • Discussion of the breadth of participatory research approaches
  • Exploring opportunities throughout the research cycle where a participatory research approach can be adopted and the advantages of doing so (for the participants, the research and the researchers)
  • Preparation and considerations required when developing a participatory research approach, especially focusing on the ethics of participatory research (including power dynamics, ownership, remuneration)
  • Facilitation techniques which can be used to engage with audiences and stakeholders

Who is this session for?

This session is available to Imperial staff members, doctoral students and postgraduate research masters students who have attended our Core Engagement Masterclass or similar training, or have equivalent experience in carrying out public engagement.

This session is particularly relevant to anyone considering a participatory approach during part or throughout the research cycle and regardless of research area or discipline.
