Career Advice: How to build a long-term career strategy post-study
Graduating from Imperial Business School is a major milestone, but for many, your career is just getting started. Developing a long-term career strategy helps you make thoughtful, informed decisions about your professional future—whether you're exploring new industries, considering leadership roles, or simply figuring out what’s next. Careers Consultant, Chloe Chambers, gives some tips on how to develop your own career strategy.
Start by identifying what matters most to you professionally.
Is it leading teams, driving innovation, building something of your own, or contributing to a cause? These priorities will shape the kinds of roles, organisations, and environments that suit you best.
From there, plan—but only as far as feels comfortable. For some, that might be a two-year timeframe, for others, five or ten. Some will even think in six-month stints which can help build momentum and reduce overwhelm! There’s no fixed timeline, and it’s natural for your goals to shift as your life and career evolve.
Your strategy isn’t fixed—it can be tweaked at any time.
In fact, some of the most valuable reflection happens when a move or change isn’t imminent. When you’re not under pressure to act, you can think more clearly about what you want, what’s working, and what might need adjusting.
Stay curious, even when things feel stable.
Curiosity leads to conversations, insights, and opportunities you didn’t expect. It keeps your thinking fresh and your options open. When you are not ‘in flux’ always consider what you may be able to offer someone looking for change – who in your network could you help right now? Pay it forward.
And remember, don’t compare your path to others.
Everyone’s career unfolds differently, shaped by unique circumstances and choices. Comparison can cloud your judgment and distract you from what’s right for you. Focus instead on making decisions that reflect your strengths, your values, and your aspirations.
You don’t have to navigate this alone. The Business School’s Careers Team offers free one-to-one coaching for alumni. Whether you’re refining your goals, exploring new options, or simply want to talk things through, we’re here to support you.
