As graduate recruitment becomes increasingly digital, online assessments are now a standard part of the application process. This week, we hear from Diya Dharira, Jiaxin Zhuang, and Claudio Vogel—MSc alumni who share how they prepared for psychometric tests and HireVue video interviews, and the resources that helped them succeed.

Psychometric Tests: What and Why

Psychometric tests are timed, standardised assessments designed to measure cognitive ability, behavioural traits, and job-relevant skills. Common types include:

  • Aptitude Tests: Numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning tests assess problem-solving, logic, and comprehension.
  • Situational Judgement Tests (SJTs): Present realistic work scenarios to evaluate decision-making and interpersonal skills.
  • Gamified Assessments: Combine game elements with psychometric testing to create engaging simulations that reflect real-world tasks.

Employers use these tools to fairly compare candidates, reduce bias, and identify those best suited to the role and company culture.

Top Tips for Success

  • Know the test type and practice using platforms like Graduates First.
  • Choose a quiet, well-equipped space.
  • Read questions carefully.
  • Manage your time—guess if needed to keep moving.
  • Be authentic, especially in personality tests.
“I think the resources such as Graduates First are a good start. I recommend everyone does them in the first 1–2 months of their programme just to get a basic understanding of how tests run and to get your cognitive abilities on par with everyone else. I encountered many company-specific tests—they will always be different, for example P&G. I practiced certain tests over and over again via the company websites or via Graduates First or via watching YouTube videos for further tips.”

HireVue Video Interviews: What and Why

HireVue interviews involve recording responses to employer-set questions. You’re given time to prepare and then record your answer. This format allows employers to assess communication skills and professionalism while managing high application volumes.

“I used VMock to prepare for HireVue interviews, as it provides targeted feedback and helps improve delivery through practice scores. My advice is to treat these assessments as learnable skills and practice regularly as this can make a significant difference in performance.”

MSc Investment & Wealth Management 2024–25
“I would suggest preparing early for these stages, as many firms send them out soon after you apply. I looked for sample questions online and collected insights shared by previous applicants. I grouped similar questions together and drafted answers that I could reuse. At first, I wrote everything down and then practiced until I could respond naturally without notes. During the video interview, it’s important to stay confident, speak clearly, and wear formal attire. Treat it like a real interview!”
