Country Lab

The Country Lab bridges science, policy, and business to drive country-level sustainability transition. Focused on leadership, organisational capability, and systemic impact, it translates world-class research into scalable change programs. Working with governments, banks, and businesses, the Lab co-creates programs that help economies implement effective, inclusive, and scalable pathways toward climate-resilient and competitive growth.

Aim: Accelerate national transitions towards sustainable, just and competitive economies by combining policy innovation, business transformation, and ecosystem coordination.

Objectives:

  1. Build systemic and organisational capabilities for sustainable growth.

  1. Support governments and businesses in designing and implementing transition strategies.

  1. Co-develop evidence-based tools and learning programs that foster and align policy, finance, and business action.

  1. Generate actionable insights through applied research embedded in real-world contexts.

Research and Collaboration Themes:

Private Sector Transition and Green Growth – fostering competitiveness and innovation through sustainability leadership.

Capability Building for Systemic Change – developing managerial, institutional, and network capabilities that sustain transformation.

Science–Policy–Practice Integration – translating research into scalable interventions for development impact.

Global-to-Local Collaboration – adapting global knowledge to local challenges via co-innovation with stakeholders.

Partnerships and Collaboration

The Country Lab at the Leonardo engages diverse stakeholders in policy, business, and academia to enable the transition to a regenerative economy and create lasting impact. For example, in Uzbekistan, working with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the World Bank, businesses, local banks, consultants, think tanks, and universities, we help shape systemic transitions that create a more competitive, sustainable, and resilient economy. Our systemic transition model uses scalable capability-building approaches in strategic sectors that enable businesses and policy actors to develop and execute change, unlock new sources of value, and create impact.'

Ibrat Djabbarov

Ibrat Djabbarov is a Research Fellow at the Leonardo Centre, where he leads the Country Lab. His research investigates how systemic, status, and strategic transformations emerge and evolve, primarily through the interplay of novelty and marginality. He also studies organisational prosociality and purpose, including how organisations pursue social impact alongside economic goals.
