MSc Finance electives
Advanced Corporate Finance
This module will develop your corporate finance knowledge. Particular emphasis will be placed on linking conceptual tools to real business decisions through the use of case studies.
Advanced Financial Statistics
This module aims to provide students with more advanced tools of time series and econometrics than the Financial Statistics module. Applications to asset pricing and risk management will also be covered.
Asset Allocation and Investment Strategies
This module is an advanced elective in investments and portfolio management. We will discuss the key trading strategies used by hedge funds and demystify the secret world of active investing. The module combines the latest research with real-world examples to show how certain trading strategies make money–and why they sometimes don’t.
Topics in Corporate Finance
This module covers a variety of topics in corporate finance, with the focus on optimal corporate financial policy. You will learn what factors determine the “optimal” capital structure and how the interplay of those factors can affect financing decisions in a way that creates value on the right hand side of the balance sheet.
Corporate Law and Corporate Tax Strategy
Beginning with the various types of business organisations, this module describes the essentials of the corporate legal system and in particular the implications of the law of obligations for contract negotiation. It will also outline the legal process when a company has financial difficulties. The second half of the module will examine tax law from the perspective of a corporate.
MSc Management electives
This module builds on the basic ideas of business-level strategy and introduces you to more advanced concepts in strategic management, and in particular, corporate strategy. Corporate strategy is concerned with determining which businesses and activities to include within the boundaries of the firm and how to coordinate them. In this regard, it differs from business-level strategy, which focuses on the competitive aspects of operating in a single line of business. Topics covered in this module include vertical and horizontal integration, international expansion, diversification, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic alliances.

Emerging Technologies in Marketing
Emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things offer businesses the unique opportunity to differentiate in a highly competitive brand market by creating immersive experiences for their customers and becoming influencer in their industry. This module will give an overview of the current trends and technologies that are likely to affect the marketing world and delve into tools and techniques that can be used to utilise them within the core development of strategic marketing of the business.
The focus of this module is to give you a practical yet theoretically grounded collection of tools you can use to be an effective leader and developer of people – one who earns the respect, appreciation and gratitude of the people who work with and for you in your future career. This module is designed to introduce you to advanced concepts in developing leadership skills to be successful in organisations.

Management of Mergers and Acquisitions
This module aims at providing theoretical and applied insights into the field of corporate mergers, acquisitions and restructurings from an international and strategic perspective.
Risk Management for Corporate and Financial Institutions
This module is aimed at developing your structured understanding of risk management principles, approaches and techniques, with reference to main risk factors (pure risks and – with a greater emphasis – financial and credit risks) and with pragmatic applications to both corporate and financial institutions. The module also addresses the way in which the global financial system and the evolution of statistical techniques, technology and banking regulation is continuously changing the world of risk management professionals and practitioners, offering a number of career opportunities at both private and public institutions.
Strategy and Innovation in Digital Business
The Internet, together with other information and communication technologies, continues to revolutionise industries. E-commerce and e-business are now a given in many industries, but many incumbent firms rooted in traditional business models struggle to figure out the new terms of competition. New start-ups using disruptive technology in combination with revolutionary business models not only threaten the incumbents in many of the traditional industries but create entirely new industries.
The goals of the module are for you to understand, critically evaluate, and apply:
- The nature of information and communication technologies (ICTs)
- Business opportunities arising from the changing landscape
- Strategies and business models to exploit opportunities afforded by ICTs
This module can only be taken if also taking The Economics of Information and Intellectual Property.
The Economics of Information and Intellectual Property
Information, especially digital information, is different in many ways from other goods and services. Yet information is still subject to the laws of economics, and can be protected as intellectual property. The purpose of this module is to explore some of the economics of information and the different intellectual property approaches to protecting information.
We examine a variety of topics including: the pricing of information goods, network effects, multi-sided markets, standards, trademarks, patents, copyright and trade secrets. As such, this module teaches you how to think strategically about two of the fundamental underpinnings of the digital economy. The module will be centred on case discussions.
Advanced Corporate Finance
In this one week block module you will analyse how corporations make optimal investment and capital structure decisions. You will also learn how capital structure considerations can be incorporated into company valuation, how managers identify and manage the risks they are exposed to, as well as how the quality of corporate governance affects companies’ performance.
This one week module provides you with the opportunity to apply and test the knowledge and skills you have acquired during the programme, by participating in a sophisticated business simulation developed by a leading provider of business simulations and business games. The simulation imitates the real world business experience of running a major company in a competitive environment. The Business Simulation will show you how to put the management “pieces” together. You will use what you have learned in previous courses for a real objective – learning how to run a business profitably.
This one-week block module introduces you to the study of advanced analytical and computational methods to support effective and informed managerial decision-making based on data. The use of these methods will be illustrated with applications in diverse disciplines, including supply chain design and production planning, supplier selection, revenue management and finance.
This one-week block module is designed to help current and emerging leaders and owners of family business understand the special challenges of Family Enterprises and manage the strategic and personal challenges that are ever present in this form of business entity. Through a serious of lectures, case studies, activities, interactive presentations and discussions with a number of visiting family business owners sharing their experiences, you will have a rich experience in understanding the “how to” and the “how not to” of Family Enterprise.
Sales Force Management
This one-week block module provides you with an understanding of how buyers make buying decisions and how to organise seller activities to stay aligned with these expectations during the buying process. You will learn how to organise the sales function within a company, as well as understanding how to manage the organisation of sales and put the correct metrics in place to manage this function.
Design Thinking for Innovation
This module introduces students to Design Thinking and its main characteristics, guiding them through the disciplined process behind it in a step-by-step fashion. Design methodologies, innovation tools and cognitive frameworks for innovation will be critically discussed and practically applied.
This module provides you with an understanding of the principal challenges facing energy businesses in the modern world, and how you should respond to them. It aims to ask whether, and how, business can provide secure supplies of energy at a reasonable cost to consumers with minimal damage to the environment while still making a profit.
This module explores the brave new world of social innovation and how businesses can tackle social problems through social innovation. While achieving business success and creating social welfare have often been seen as oppositional, a new generation is challenging this by trying to use business as a force for good. These social innovators tackle social problems in two main ways: by becoming social entrepreneurs who lead social enterprises (businesses that seek to fulfill a social mission), or by becoming social intrapreneurs who seek to achieve social change within the for-profit firms that employ them. Through this module you will be equipped with the tools to become a social innovator.
In this module you will explore consumer psychology and how consumer behaviour can be shaped. The module examines consumer psychology theories and current findings to learn how to apply these to develop marketing techniques that cut through the noise, shape or alter consumer behaviour, and help build and sustain consumer loyalty.
Venture Capital and Growth Finance
This module covers the ways that growth-oriented ventures secure the financial resources they need and how they develop capabilities to outperform their competitions and internationalise. The module will help you understand the success factors of high growth ventures before and after their initial public offering (IPO).
