Make a difference

Social impact

Our vision is to pioneer new ways of enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with the wonder of science, engineering, medicine and business. We share this wonder by engaging with the public – including schools, patients and local communities. This is a key opportunity to share ideas and discoveries and ensure our education and research benefits society.

Combine your passion for social action with your academic expertise, work experience and entrepreneurial spirit to benefit society and affect change in the world.

Founded by a Business School student in 2017, this student-led volunteering programme helps elderly residents with digital literacy. Weekly drop-in sessions are run at the Edward Woods Community Centre to help older residents with their technology queries and help reduce isolation levels.

Get involved: volunteer for this rewarding, award-winning programme praised by students and the local community.

Imperial College runs a number of in-school and on-campus activities for school children such as the FoNS Schools Sciences Competition, the Pimlico Connection tutoring scheme and a range of workshops and demo days at the Wohl Reach Out Lab. There are also opportunities to spend an hour a week helping students and academics improve their English and sharing your experiences of the UK through The Conversation Project or to mentor and motivate school children of all ages through IntoUniversity.

A first of its kind for any UK university. Our Invention Rooms is Imperial’s newest platform for local community engagement. This dynamic shared space in the heart of our White City campus gives people from all backgrounds the opportunity to get hands on and take part in creative, entrepreneurial programmes.

Sparking groundbreaking innovation:

Our exceptional work at The Invention Rooms builds on a worldwide ‘maker movement’ in which the College has played a pioneering role. The results are exciting. Successful student inventions from Advanced Hackspace (boasting over 2,000 members and growing fast) include Lifebox, a low-cost baby incubator, and GyroGlove which dampens hand tremors for patients with Parkinson’s.

Explore the three unique zones inside our Invention Rooms:

The Dangoor Reach Out Makerspace – a specially designed space for children and young people to gain hands-on experience of entrepreneurial thinking and shape ideas into real prototypes.

Advanced Hackspace – cutting-edge workshop facilities for students, staff and partners to work together, solve challenges and turn ideas into innovative inventions.

Interaction Zone Cafe – a welcoming venue for public events, where the local community and College partners can connect with science and Imperial’s research.

Feel passionate about social change? Take action with Imperial College Union’s volunteering programme. Choose from over 150 community and charitable partner organisations offering a wide range of roles and opportunities.

Join forces: there are also one-off group volunteering opportunities across London throughout the year, a great way to meet new people and take part in a rewarding activity.

This is your unique opportunity to witness prominent leaders from the public and private sector shaping the future of governments worldwide.

A group of students from our MBA and MSc programmes attended the World Government Summit 2019 in Dubai and listened to talks from Imran Khan, Ariana Huffington, Pope Francis, multiple Nobel Peace Laureates and other world and business leaders. Students also participated in the Global Universities Challenge.

These annual awards recognise and reward staff, students and partners who have delivered excellence in schools, community, research or patient engagement.

In 2017 Imperial College established the Student Award for Societal Engagement, which is aimed at undergraduate or postgraduate students who have taken the initiative to deliver high-quality engagement activities with the public, schools, community groups or patients.
