Build your foundation in business
The core modules will build rapidly on your previous experience, while introducing new and challenging disciplines. You will cover the general functions of management, explore essential business topics and acquire the skills to be an effective and inspiring leader in whatever you choose.
When you are studying your core modules, you will spend two and a half days on campus (Friday, Saturday and a half day on Sunday) every three – four weeks.
The online pre-study modules will ensure you have the basic knowledge and skills required for the start of the programme. You will be able to access these modules covering mathematics, accounting, careers and professional development from three months prior to the start of the programme. An online tutor works in tandem with programme faculty to support your study outside the classroom, monitoring progress and performance in quizzes and providing guidance.
This primer module will introduce the basics of financial accounting, including how to interpret financial statements such as balance sheets, profit and loss, as well as cash flow. It will enable you to appreciate the usefulness and limitations of the information provided by these statements for evaluating the performance of a company.
The objective of this module is to ensure that you have a grasp of the mathematics you will encounter on your MBA programme, particularly for the more quantitative courses.
This module introduces you to the most frequently used quantitative methods for analysing data and making business decisions.
Data Analysis Primer
This module is designed to serve as preparation for the data analysis topics you will typically encounter on your degree programme.
This module focuses on sustainability from three key perspectives; corporate sustainability, business ethics and social innovation. It will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability issues, the relevance for policymakers, the role of corporations and the implications for decision-making on sustainability issues in business operations.
Plagiarism is the presentation of another person’s words, ideas, judgement or data as though they were your own. Many think plagiarism is just copying other people's work, but this is only just one aspect. To succeed during your MBA you will need to understand how to ensure your work – whether individual or group assignments – follow academic regulations.
Core 1 Modules
This module explores the basic analytical principles that can guide a manager in making complex decisions. You will learn how to identify the underlying analytical structure in a seemingly complex and amorphous decision problem and the role of uncertainty and risk in the decision-making process. You will be able to analyse data to understand relationships and predict future outcomes, while building models, decision trees and simulations to help understand problems with more clarity.
Financial and Management Accounting
This module will contribute to your managerial potential by explaining the techniques of financial management accounting and examining the relevance to broader issues of decision-making and organisational control. You will also examine the uses of financial and management accounting information for a wide range of decisions relating to financial performance, corporate social responsibility and governance and business sustainability.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The Innovation and Entrepreneurship module offers you a unique opportunity to build your knowledge, skills and experience in this important topic which covers innovation, entrepreneurship and design as core elements. The module introduces you to the themes that are relevant if you want to clearly define problems in the market place and develop unique solutions to address these problems. It enables you to understand how to introduce these solutions into the market and analyse the financial feasibility of the overall business case.
This module introduces basic economic concepts of practical value in business life, providing a conceptual framework for assessing the interaction between firms and markets, and identifying the ways in which profit opportunities arise in markets and can be effectively exploited. It will provide a framework for modelling the interaction between consumers and producers, study alternative market structures ranging from monopoly to perfect competition, and enable students to identify and analyse strategic interaction between market participants.
This module will give you a practical yet theoretically grounded collection of tools you can use to be an effective leader and manager of people—one who earns the respect, appreciation and gratitude of the people who work with and for you in your future career. You will learn how modern organisations work (and fail). The module will show how your success as a leader, manager and professional depends on how well you work in organisations with and through people to deliver good results.
Core 2 Modules
By undertaking this module, you will gain a market-oriented framework for analysing the major types of financial decisions made by corporations. It will provide an introduction to the objective function of the firm, present value techniques, asset valuation, capital budgeting principles and problems, the capital asset pricing model, the operation and efficiency of financial markets and the financial decisions of firms.
This module provides a basic framework to help you understand how macroeconomics explains global events. At the end of the module, you will appreciate how business, government and the global economy interact, which will give you the understanding required to make more informed managerial decisions. It aims to provide a practical understanding of the workings of a modern economy as a basis for interpreting the factors that influence aggregate expenditure and the impact of changes in this demand on employment, inflation and the trade balance.
Effective marketing management requires a clear understanding of consumers and the market in general. This module will help you to understand how marketing contributes to a business’ competitiveness and survival and provides you with critical marketing insights, tools, and techniques. It will cover concepts associated with brand management, promotion and services marketing.
Strategy is about how an organisation achieves an advantage in a competitive, fast paced environment by harnessing its resources and competencies over relatively long periods of time, in pursuit of specific goals. Integration of external and internal perspectives provides the basic framework for strategic thinking. The module will give a holistic view of the firm, developing your ability to think beyond day-to-day business activities and challenging you to ask the right questions about its future.
