Cost: Imperial's Growth and Skills Levy fully funds the course fee (£5,000), and the department is not charged. The standard cancellation policy will apply.
Duration: 13 Months + 1 Month End Point Assessment.

Have you recently taken your first steps into line management or a supervisory role, or are you hoping to do so in the near future? This course will allow you to develop the core knowledge and practical skills to manage, motivate and inspire others.
The 14-month programme is fully aligned to the level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship Standard and will involve monthly workshops, group coaching, 1:1 skills coaching and work-based application of learning.
You will join a cohort of new and aspiring managers from across Imperial and work towards a nationally recognised management qualification.

Information
This programme is primarily geared towards:
- New managers with less than two years of management experience.
- Aspiring managers who do not yet have direct reports or formal supervisory responsibilities.
Please note: this programme is not appropriate for staff who have already completed a leadership and management qualification at level 3 or above.
More experienced managers should explore our internal suite of Management Development resources. Those who wish to gain a management qualification can register their interest for our new level 5 Management Development apprenticeship, launching next academic year.
Applicants should:
- Have approval from your line manager.
- Be ready to commit to the minimum study requirement (up to two days a month for workshops and group coaching over 14 months).
- Have agreed with your manager that your participation can be balanced with the operational demands of your role.
- Have long enough remaining on your contract of employment to complete the programme (i.e. at least 14 months from the course start date).
- Meet the Department for Education funding rules around Right to Work in the UK and residency.
The programme is fully aligned to the level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship Standard and will enable participants to:
- Better understand the behaviours, processes and skills needed to manage people effectively.
- Explore leadership styles, identify your preferences and understand the impact on your team and colleagues.
- Build your awareness of basic business and operational management principles.
- Effectively manage performance, including tough conversations around under-performance.
- Learn about the Equality Act (2010) and how to manage a culture of inclusion and diversity at work.
- Build your communication skills and confidence, including effectively chairing and participating in meetings and team briefings.
- Learn how to initiate and manage small projects.
Participants will attend a monthly workshop and a monthly group coaching session, with follow-up activities in between.
On successful completion, participants will gain:
- Level 3 Team Leader Apprenticeship.
- Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management, accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (optional add-on, and involves the completion of two additional assignments).
- The option to apply for an Associate Member of the Chartered Management Institute (ACMI).
