Is this mandatory?

The rollout of Line Manager sessions has been approved by UMB in response to a clear need to improve Line managers' confidence and practice across the University.

All Line managers are expected to attend. We are taking a tailored approach by Faculty/Directorate to respond to the different needs of new and existing line managers, ensuring the training has the most relevance and impact for those attending.

How much time will this take?

The live sessions are typically 1-2 hours long. Social learning and self-directed resources are flexible and self-paced. Managers can engage as much or as little as they choose beyond the core sessions. The sessions are designed to equip managers with the information that will save them time later.

It is an investment in their time that will pay dividends later when they have the information they need to manage more efficiently and effectively

My managers are already very busy. Is this the right time?

The programme is designed to make management easier over time, not harder. The toolkit and policy library are immediately useful in day-to-day practice. We have been deliberate about keeping the formal time commitment manageable.

Some of my managers have already undertaken development elsewhere. Is this relevant to them?

Yes, the PMF is not remedial. It is about clarity of responsibilities and building confidence to navigate the challenges of people management effectively. Even experienced managers benefit from peer learning and access to resources.

How will you know if it is working?

We are using a four-level evaluation model: participant reaction, learning outcomes, behaviour change, and organisational impact. We will share findings with you as we go, and your faculty's feedback will directly shape how the programme develops.
