The Changing the Face of Science programme
The Changing the Face of Science programme (CFoS) started in 2022 in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Imperial College London in response to the growing realisation that across the UK:
- fewer students from low-income and ethnic minority groups take natural science subjects in GCSE, leading to a smaller number meeting A-level requirements for science programmes at top universities;
- a disproportionately small percent of Black and minority ethnic students receive a 2:1 or better at university;
- students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented at university are more likely to report a lack of sense of belonging and community on campus.
Our aims
The aims of the programme are to:
- provide mentorship and skills development opportunities to underrepresented students within the Faculty of Natural Sciences;
- promote an environment in which all students can find their place at Imperial;
- create targeted outreach and school visits to engage with and encourage students from ALL backgrounds to study the natural sciences;
- support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds through the UCAS application process.
