Plaxica is a spin-out from, and based, at Imperial College London developing a new generation of low cost biopolymers derived from renewable resources.

Plaxica has developed technology to manufacture polylactic acid (PLA) biopolymers with lower costs and improved physical properties compared to current biopolymers. PLA polymers are 100% bio-based, have a lower environmental footprint, and are fully recyclable.

Plaxica's technology is capable of utilising a wide range of sugar feedstocks and is particularly suited to the use of sugars derived from cellulosic material - which are normally waste products and do not, in general, take food out of the supply chain.

Plaxica’s novel technology was initially developed at Imperial College London, in the laboratories of Professor Vernon Gibson FRS and Dr Ed Marshall. The company was founded by Imperial Innovations in 2009.
