The FoNS Student AV Initiative gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with teaching room technology while supporting lecturers in lecture theatres.

Student AV Assistants provide first-line support during lectures, helping lecturers use the available technology and quickly resolving issues that arise. They also help ensure Panopto recordings are captured successfully by checking recording equipment before teaching begins and monitoring sessions where required.

Full training is provided by the Faculty AV Support Team, who support the delivery of Panopto and teaching technologies across Natural Sciences. No previous AV experience is required, making the programme a great opportunity for students interested in developing practical technical skills in a real-world environment.

Beyond the technical experience, the role helps students build confidence, communication skills and problem-solving abilities. As one Student AV Assistant put it, "being able to fix problems quickly makes you feel really useful," while another commented that "the role has definitely made me more confident." Students also value the opportunity to work closely with academic and professional services staff they might not otherwise meet.

The programme provides valuable transferable skills and experience that can strengthen a CV, demonstrating technical aptitude, reliability and commitment while making a meaningful contribution to the student experience.

A big thank you to this year's cohort for all their hard work and support.
