Building confidence and capability in AI
Artificial Intelligence is changing how we work, learn and solve problems. As a leading STEMB university, Imperial wants every colleague to have the knowledge and confidence to understand AI, use it responsibly where appropriate, and make informed decisions about when not to use it. The aim is not for everyone to become an AI expert, but for everyone to develop a strong foundation in AI literacy.
AI for the Workplace is a new learning programme designed for all Imperial staff. It combines practical skills, responsible use and real-world workplace application, helping colleagues understand where AI can support their work and where human judgement remains essential.
How the programme works
The programme consists of four connected courses:
- Course 1: AI Foundations for Professional Contexts
- Course 2: Responsible AI for Professional Practice
- Course 3: Applied AI and Agentic Workflows
- Course 4: AI in Practice Project
The first course provides a common foundation for all staff and forms the starting point for the programme. We are asking all staff to complete this course over the coming months.
Once you have completed Course 1, you will be invited to complete a short self-assessment to help identify which additional learning opportunities may be most relevant to your role and experience.

No. The course is designed for colleagues with a wide range of experience, including those who have never used AI before.
The training is open to all staff and students, as well as those with honorary associations that grant them single sign-on access. It is not open to contingent workers.
No. Imperial expects colleagues to understand AI and how it can be used responsibly and effectively. The focus is on AI literacy and informed decision-making, not mandatory AI adoption.
As with any new skill, learning requires an initial investment of time. Over time, AI can help colleagues work more efficiently, improve productivity, and reduce administrative effort.
AI does not replace professional judgement or accountability. Colleagues remain responsible for reviewing outputs and ensuring decisions are appropriate, accurate and aligned with relevant policies and guidance.
