External Examiners may need to complete a Right to Work (RTW) check to finalise their appointment. New appointees will be assessed to determine whether they are in scope for an RTW check, and the People Function will conduct the check where required.
For individuals who are in scope, Imperial has a legal obligation to complete the RTW check before the appointment commences.
Individuals must hold an immigration status that permits them to undertake the examination activity, whether through appropriate right to work in the UK or an appropriate visitor route. Where the activity is not permitted, the examination may not take place.
For further information on External Examiner appointments, please review the Academic Governance webpage.
Eligibility to undertake examination
- Examining in the UK - Existing immigration permission
- Examining in the UK - Standard Visitor (Permitted Paid Engagement)
- Examining remotely from outside the UK
The People Function will contact the incoming appointee and request the appropriate documentation from List A or B to demonstrate eligibility to undertake the activity in the UK. Examples of acceptable evidence include a valid UK or Irish passport, or a Home Office share code. The People Function will then complete an identity check with the individual.
Where an individual does not hold existing Right to Work in the UK and will enter the UK from overseas, they may be permitted to undertake examination under the Permitted Paid Engagement route.
The examiner must ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements of the Standard Visitor route and Permitted Paid Engagements.
Depending on their nationality, they may need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the UK.
Where examinations are approved to be made remotely and undertaken wholly overseas, we are not required to conduct a Right to Work check.
