The perimenopause and the menopause affects half of the population at some point and the physical and mental effects can impact their working lives too. Even though it is experienced by women, the perimenopause and the menopause can affect men too – family members, friends, colleagues, line managers etc.

Despite this, the perimenopause and the menopause is still a taboo subject. This means that it is largely misunderstood and surrounded by myths and stereotypes, which we will explore. Within the session there will also be a consideration of Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI); having the menopause before the age of 40.

Dr. Theodora Kalentzi (Imperial Alumna) is the founder of the Medical Prime clinic in the City of London and leads the Medical Prime team. She is an experienced British Menopause Society (BMS) Accredited Menopause Specialist and a General Practitioner. The BMS is the specialist authority for menopause and post reproductive health in the UK. Theodora holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and an Advanced Certificate in Menopause Care. She has held several senior healthcare management positions, including NHS Medical Director. Theodora is a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, an Advisory Board Member of the Sleep Council, a Clinical Teaching Fellow at Imperial College London and Women’s Healthcare Advisor with the Institute of Directors Glass Ceiling Group. She  is a member of the British Menopause Society, the European Menopause and Andropause Society, and the International Menopause Society. Theodora is also a member of the Independent Doctors Federation, The Institute of Directors and the British Medical Association (BMA).

Theodora is passionate about quality care, helping people consider a holistic approach to their health, increasing awareness about the perimenopause, the menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). Theodora has a deep interest in women’s health. She is an engaging speaker and often delivers presentations on the subject of the menopause to a wide range of organisations.

Theodora will be followed by a talk from  Elinor Sawyer from Kings College London.  Elinor Sawyer is Professor of Clinical Oncology and Breast Cancer Genetics at King’s College London and Guy’s Cancer Centre. She trained as a clinician scientist at the London Research Institute.  Her PhD focused on the molecular genetics of phyllodes tumours. Her current research interests are genetic predisposition to breast cancer, particularly lobular breast cancer and DCIS, with a focus on identification of biomarkers that predict progression of LCIS and DCIS. She is a member of the Sloane Steering Committee (a national UK audit of screen detected DCIS) and leads on the molecular analyses of the UK DCIS samples in the CRUK Grand Challenge, PRECISION, and the application of these findings to clinical practice. She is on the Trials Management Group of three National UK radiotherapy studies (IMPORT–LOW, IMPORT–HIGH, Fast Forward) and is also involved in the translational studies associated with these trials.

The event will be followed by refreshments and we invite female alumni to join us to meet other graduates and grow your network in a really friendly space. If you have never been to a Women's alumni event make this one your first!
