Use of Academic Titles

To ensure consistency across Imperial web pages, staff profiles, publications and other official communications, the following guidance applies to the use of academic titles.

Use of the title "Professor" (Prof)

Only individuals who hold a substantive appointment as a Professor or who hold a Chair may use the title Prof before their name.

Examples

• Prof Jane Smith
• Prof John Patel

Associate Professors and Assistant Professors

Individuals appointed as Associate Professor or Assistant Professor should not use the title Prof before their name. Where they hold a doctoral qualification, they should use Dr.

Examples

• Dr Jane Smith, Associate Professor of Chemistry
• Dr John Patel, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Professors of Practice

Individuals appointed as Professor of Practice should not use the title Prof before their name. They should use Dr before their name, and their appointment should be stated in full after their name.

Example

• Dr Jane Smith, Professor of Practice in Engineering

Honorary, Visiting, Emeritus and Other Professorial Appointments

Honorary, Visiting, Emeritus, Clinical and other professorial appointments should follow the same principle. The title Prof may only be used where the individual holds an appointment that carries professor status at another Educational Institution. Where appropriate, the specific appointment title should be stated in full.
