The 2026 FoNS EdTech Student Internship Programme brought together three students for a six-week summer placement, working alongside the EdTech Lab team in a hybrid professional environment.
The programme combined live digital education projects, student partnership and structured professional development, giving interns opportunities to contribute their perspectives while developing practical workplace, communication, learning design and digital skills.

What did our interns work on?
- Supporting students in Canvas
- Perspective and partnership
- GenAI for student support
- Professional and digital skills
Supporting students in Canvas
With Imperial moving to Canvas, the interns brought an important student perspective to the development of student-facing support.
They explored the student journey through Canvas, developed and reviewed guidance, tested resources and considered how students could find information and support more easily.
Their work helped ensure that resources were informed not only by how Canvas works, but by how students are likely to experience and use it.
Student perspective and partnership
Throughout the internship, students were encouraged to contribute ideas, question assumptions and bring their own experiences into wider digital education activities.
This included contributing to Students for Humanity and skills-development discussions, working with StudentShapers, and considering how resources and activities could be made meaningful and relevant to students.
The interns were not simply testing finished resources — their perspectives helped shape the work itself.
Exploring GenAI for student support
The interns explored how Generative AI might support students in finding and interacting with trusted information and guidance.
They considered potential uses such as FAQs and AI-supported guidance, while also exploring some of the practical considerations around responsible use of GenAI in education.
Developing professional and digital skills
Alongside project work, interns took part in a structured programme of learning and professional development.
This included a multimedia masterclass, accessibility development, Canvas preparation, a Mini ABC learning-design workshop, digital capabilities activities and opportunities to develop skills in professional communication, project management and collaborative working.
The interns also helped design and deliver a Canvas training session, moving from learning about digital education to supporting the learning of others.

Useful working practices
"...general digital organisation, as well as skills gained from presenting our work as both of these tie in to a lot to different parts of my course. Maybe also more usage of the calendar too to manage time more coherently.”
- Mikael, Year 2 Chemistry
Greatest impact on my learning
“Because of these specific workshops, I felt fully prepared and confident to deliver a training workshop for the very first time, which was a massive milestone for my personal and professional development.”
- Yi, Year 2 Chemistry
Main take away from programme
”Self confidence, belief in myself and my professional abilities”
- Finley, Year 1 Chemistry
See the internship through our students' eyes
Each of our interns created a Week in the Life video capturing their experience of working with the EdTech Lab, the projects they contributed to and what they learned along the way.
