What we do
We are working to provide educational inspiration, training and support in an institution committed to a research-led education and student experience of the highest quality."
Professor Martyn Kingsbury, Director of Educational Development
The EDU offers a broad spectrum provision that provides a needs-based and timely approach to the educational development of all who teach Imperial students.
Our provision includes a suite of stand-alone workshops covering various aspects of learning and teaching, a range of taught programmes up to master's level and a bespoke consultancy service for all involved in teaching at Imperial.
We are a part of Imperial's Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship.
Who we are
We are a small group of academics and support staff from a variety of different disciplinary backgrounds, the former of whom have experience of teaching and supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with expertise in educational theory and practice.
The Educational Development Unit has a College-wide role to enhance the profile of teaching, to promote research into all aspects of teaching, learning, course design, supervision and assessment and to promote a scholarly approach to educational development. Several staff in the EDU are active educational researchers and authors.
Scholarly activity
- Supporting and promoting educational scholarship across the College
- The research and scholarly interests of EDU staff
- The EDU runs CHERSNet, the successor to the Educational Enquiry Network (EDEN) in promoting educational enquiry and supporting the development and dissemination of educational scholarship at Imperial.
- We also welcome queries, discussion, or involvement in any educational research taking place in College. Please refer to our contact information.
- We run the MEd in University Learning and Teaching on which EDU academic staff teach and supervise the compulsory educational research methods module and the substantial dissertation element. It may occasionally be possible for staff or students not taking the programme to attend the research methods module. Please contact us (medult@imperial.ac.uk).
- EDU staff seek to incorporate research findings into their activities wherever appropriate and to underpin their work with suitable evidence and theory.
- EDU staff undertake PhD supervision, co-supervising with other departments.
The research interests of staff are wide ranging and include e-learning, academic identity, a range of teaching and learning issues, and learning in a number of disciplines. Staff are involved in:
- Publications.
- Research Projects. These include: the preparation of PhD students for careers, especially as academics (the EDU is a network partner in a CETL on Preparing for Academic Practice; work on the role and identity formation of educational developers across Europe; perceptions of clinical teaching; and the links between teaching and research).
